She was appointed Queen Mother of Ejisu, a state in the Asante Confederacy by her brother. After her brother’s death, Yaa Asantewaa led a series of Anglo-Asante wars against British invasion that lasted into the 19th century. Years after Yaa Asantewaa’s death, the Asante protectorate gained independence from British rule in March 1957, and became apart of Ghana. This was the first African nation to obtain this goal.
