After her father died, 18 year old Cleopatra and 12 year old brother, Ptolemy XIII, became joint monarchs. When attempts were made to become sole ruler, Cleopatra was exiled out of Egypt. Cleopatra made her return when she met Julius Ceasar and became his mistress. After Ptolemy’s death, Julius Ceasar restored Cleopatra to the throne, with Ptolemy XIV. There were a series of events between Julius Ceasar, another Roman leader, Mark Anthony (who succeeded after Ceasar), and her remaining brothers that caused many conflicts between Egypt and Rome. Her death marked the end of the Hellenistic Era and beginning of the Roman Era in the Mediterranean.
