The Zulu warrior is the heart of Zulu Nation and is the first line of defense against rival clans or invasions. Zulu warriors are made up of able-bodied men ages 19-40 (40 was age in which a Zulu warrior may be put on a reserve list and allowed to marry). Each regiment had their own identifying shield, headdress, or jewelry. Their weapons were the shield, a broad spear, and guns, but because they didn’t carry a lot of baggage like European armies, the Zulu warrior was able to cover large distances; up to 20 miles a day. In emergencies, Zulu warriors can cover twice the distance. Historic changes were made to the Zulu warrior’s training during Shaka’s reign.
